HabeshaHire Insight · Diaspora investment research
Before you send your savings home, know the rules as they are now.
Between 2024 and 2026, nearly every rule changed: the birr was floated, foreigners can now buy property, trade opened up, a stock exchange launched — and the advice your relatives remember is out of date. We research the kind of venture you're weighing and give you a clear, current, honest answer. Sometimes that answer is "not yet." You'll hear it straight either way.
What changed while you were abroad
The birr was floated (2024)
The exchange rate regime changed completely, with a real gap between official and parallel rates. Currency risk is now the first question in any investment decision — not an afterthought.
Property opened up (2025)
Foreign nationals can now buy residential property under new rules — and holders of the Ethiopian Origin ID (Yellow Card) have a very different, stronger position. Which passport-and-ID combination you hold changes everything.
Trade & banking opened (2024–25)
Import, export, retail, and banking rules were rewritten, with big thresholds for foreigners — and important exemptions for diaspora of Ethiopian origin. A stock exchange now exists.
